Two men were detained and Atlanta police were searching for a third person Wednesday afternoon after gunfire erupted inside Piedmont Park, prompting a significant police response and an initial active-shooter investigation.
Atlanta police said officers were called to the area near the park pavilion, close to the Activity Oval and tennis courts, at about 3:20 p.m. September 9, 2026, following reports of shots fired. Officers arrived within minutes and treated the situation as an active-shooter incident while they worked to determine what had happened.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said two adult men, ages 29 and 21, were detained in connection with the shooting. Their identities have not been released, and police were continuing to search for a third person believed to have been involved.
Investigators said the gunfire appeared to have stemmed from an escalating dispute. Police recovered a pistol and a rifle at the scene and were also searching the park for any additional weapon that may have been discarded.
Despite the initial reports of gunfire and the large emergency response, police said no one was injured and no property damage was reported. Authorities also said there was no continuing threat to the public once the immediate situation was contained.
One responding officer encountered one of the people believed to be involved while the individual was reportedly attempting to change clothes, according to Chief Schierbaum. Police subsequently detained the 21-year-old and 29-year-old as investigators worked to establish their roles in the incident.
The shooting occurred in a heavily used section of Piedmont Park, one of Atlanta’s best-known public gathering places. The police response temporarily brought a heightened security presence to the area as officers searched portions of the park and processed evidence.
The incident also occurred ahead of an Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performance scheduled for Wednesday evening. Although the shooting prompted a major police response, authorities said there was no ongoing threat, and the scheduled concert was expected to proceed.
For people who were in or around the park when the gunfire was reported, the response was understandably alarming. Officers quickly moved into the area after the emergency calls, while investigators worked to determine how the dispute developed into gunfire and whether additional weapons or evidence remained in the park.
Police have not yet announced formal charges against the two detained men, and the third person’s identity and whereabouts have not been released. Investigators are continuing to examine evidence and interview witnesses as they work to reconstruct the confrontation.
