Desmond Holly, a 16-year-old student at Evergreen High School in Colorado, died after opening fire at the school on September 10, 2025, in an attack that wounded two fellow students and shocked the Evergreen community.
Authorities said Holly entered the school carrying a revolver and began firing shortly before 12:30 p.m. The shooting occurred both inside the school and in an area outside the building. Investigators said Holly fired multiple rounds and reloaded the weapon several times. Locked security doors inside the school prevented him from reaching additional areas of the building, which authorities said likely limited the number of people who were exposed to the gunfire.
The two surviving victims suffered critical injuries and required extensive medical treatment. Silverstone was publicly identified, while authorities initially withheld the identity of the other teenage victim because of the victim’s age.
In the days following the shooting, investigators examined Holly’s online activity and said he appeared to have been radicalized through extremist online networks. The Anti-Defamation League later reported that accounts linked to Holly contained white-supremacist and neo-Nazi material, as well as content expressing an intense fascination with previous mass shootings.
The FBI also confirmed that it had received a tip in July 2025 concerning a social-media account later connected to Holly. The account had posted nonspecific threats about a possible mass shooting. The FBI opened an assessment but investigators did not know the identity of the person behind the account at the time.
Despite the extensive investigation, authorities have said that some questions surrounding Holly’s motivations may never be answered. Jefferson County officials ultimately concluded their investigation into whether his parents should face charges related to the firearm. In February 2026, the sheriff’s office announced that no charges would be filed against his parents, saying investigators had insufficient evidence to establish criminal responsibility.
Investigators determined that the revolver used in the attack was a family firearm. According to the sheriff’s office, it had originally belonged to one of Holly’s grandparents and had been kept in a locked gun safe. Investigators collected DNA samples from Holly’s parents and found no link between them and the firearm.
The Evergreen shooting left students, families, teachers and residents dealing with the aftermath of violence at a school that had become the center of national attention. Two teenagers survived the shooting, but their injuries and the emotional consequences of the attack continued long after the gunfire ended.
For investigators, the case also became an examination of how online radicalization, violent internet communities and fascination with previous attackers can intersect before a school shooting. Authorities have stressed that the precise motive behind Holly’s actions remains difficult to establish because he died during the attack.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office eventually closed the investigation into potential charges against Holly’s parents, while acknowledging the lasting pain caused by the shooting. The case remains a deeply traumatic chapter for Evergreen and for the families of the students who were wounded.
