A missing-person case involving 38-year-old David Lewis of Kahului has ended safely after authorities announced that he had been located and was found to be in good health.
The Maui Police Department had appealed to the public for help finding Lewis after a concerned acquaintance reported him missing on August 14, 2026. Police said Lewis had not maintained his usual contact with friends and acquaintances, raising concerns about his whereabouts.
According to investigators, Lewis had last spoken with the acquaintance by phone in February. Before that, he had reportedly maintained regular monthly contact. Police also learned that he had not been in contact with several mutual friends or associates.
Authorities documented their last known contact with Lewis in the Kahului area on July 14. Police said his known contact number was disconnected or unavailable and that he was not believed to have, or be known to operate, a vehicle.
At the time of the appeal, police described Lewis as 5 feet 10 inches tall and approximately 180 pounds, with sandy brown hair and brown eyes. Investigators did not know what he had been wearing when he was last seen.
The circumstances surrounding the period during which Lewis was out of contact were not immediately clear, but police sought information from members of the public who might have known his whereabouts.
The case generated concern because of the length of time since Lewis had maintained regular communication with people who knew him. Authorities urged anyone with information to contact the Maui Police Department while officers worked to establish his whereabouts.
The search, however, came to a positive conclusion. On August 17, police announced that Lewis had been located safely and was in good health.
The department thanked members of the public for their assistance and cooperation during the search.
With Lewis safely located, the immediate missing-person investigation has been resolved. Authorities did not release additional details about where he was found or why he had been out of contact.
The case serves as another reminder of the importance of quickly reporting concerns when a person unexpectedly disappears from their normal routine, particularly when friends or family members are unable to establish contact.
For Lewis’s friends, acquaintances and others who had been concerned about his safety, the announcement that he had been found in good health brought a welcome end to what had been a worrying search.
