Mike Hearon Missing: Tennessee Father Vanished Without a Trace Near the Great Smoky Mountains

More than 18 years after Michael Edwin “Mike” Hearon disappeared from his rural property in East Tennessee, the mystery surrounding his whereabouts remains unsolved, leaving his family without answers and investigators with remarkably few clues.

Hearon was 51 when he vanished on August 23, 2008, after traveling to his property in Happy Valley, an area near the boundary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was an experienced outdoorsman who knew the surrounding land well, making his disappearance especially puzzling to those who knew him.

The day began as an ordinary trip to the property. Hearon had spoken with his sons, Andy and Matt, that morning and planned to spend time at the farm. He was also preparing to mow grass on a neighboring property. Later that morning, neighbors saw him arrive at his home and, not long afterward, saw him riding an ATV along Bell Branch Road.

That sighting would become one of the last confirmed moments anyone saw him.

When family members became concerned and began looking for him, they found that Hearon’s truck was still at the property. His keys, cellphone, identification and other personal belongings were left behind. The lawnmower and trailer were also still there.

But one of his ATVs was missing.

The discovery led his family to fear that Hearon could have suffered an accident somewhere in the heavily wooded terrain. A search was launched involving the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, National Park Service personnel, emergency responders and other search teams.

Searchers combed the property and surrounding wilderness, while tracking dogs, drones, divers and specialized personnel were used in efforts to locate him. Heavy rain complicated portions of the search, but investigators continued looking for any indication of where Hearon might have gone.

Several days later, the missing ATV was found in a wooded area roughly a mile from his property. The discovery raised even more questions.

The ATV was not found wrecked, and there was no obvious evidence of an accident. Its keys were still in the ignition. Investigators and family members found no clear trail leading away from the vehicle, and searches around the location failed to produce evidence explaining what had happened to Hearon.

There were no confirmed signs of blood, clothing belonging to Hearon or other physical evidence indicating that he had been injured at the location.

The official search was eventually called off, but the case did not end there. Additional searches were conducted after the initial operation, including a renewed search in January 2009. Investigators found an item of clothing near the ATV location, but it was determined not to belong to Hearon. Bones discovered near a fire pit were also examined and determined to be animal remains rather than human remains.

No discovery has established what happened to him.

Hearon’s disappearance has remained particularly painful for his family because there was no clear indication beforehand that he intended to leave his life behind. He was a father, businessman and longtime resident of East Tennessee who was familiar with the wilderness surrounding his property.

His sons have continued to seek answers over the years, while the case has received renewed attention through podcasts, missing-person investigations and true-crime coverage.

Authorities have never publicly established a definitive explanation for Hearon’s disappearance. The lack of physical evidence has left several possibilities open, but speculation about what may have happened should not be confused with established facts.

What is known is that Hearon left his property on an ATV on August 23, 2008, and was never seen again. The ATV was later recovered, but Hearon himself was not.

Today, Mike Hearon remains missing.

His disappearance continues to stand as one of East Tennessee’s enduring missing-person mysteries, with the passage of time doing little to resolve the central question that has haunted his family for years: What happened to Mike Hearon after he rode away from his Happy Valley property?

Anyone with information about Hearon’s disappearance is urged to contact the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. Even after all these years, investigators and his family continue to hope that someone may have information capable of finally explaining what happened.
